To wrap up our chapter on money, we opened our own classroom store. Check out the fun we had:

Over the next month we will be working on Chapter 8: Recognize Number Patterns and will then move onto Chapter 13: Understand Place Value

We have done an incredible job with our speed tests, and will be completing our last addition speed test soon. Keep a look out for our "Subtraction Fact Book" to come home. We will start with our zero subtraction facts as our first subtraction speed test.
December 6, 2013
We finished off Chapter 4 by conducting surveys with other 7th Age math classes. In teams, we decided what "favorites" we would graph. The topics included favorite holidays, drinks, ice cream flavors, pets, and reptiles. We visited other classes, gathered votes, and made bar graphs of our results.
Next week we will start working in Chapter 3: Develop Subtraction Concepts
Here are the skills we will be covering:
Once we complete our addition speed tests (we have 8's, 9's, and 10's left), we will start working on our subtraction speed tests.

We like to play games in math class that help reinforce the skills we are learning. Here's a list of a few games we have learned recently that can easily be played at home:
"Doubles Dice Game" The game board came home with the students today.

We have worked hard over the last few weeks mastering our facts. So far everyone has received a sticker on their Speed Tests for their 0s, 1s, and 2s facts!! We have learned the "counting up" strategy to help us with these facts. We start with the bigger number and then count up, this means we put the bigger number in our head (not on our hands :)) and then add on. Help your son or daughter to remember this strategy when they are practicing their facts at home.
Lastly, here is a fun website with timed math practice games for your son or daughter to play when they are practicing their facts: http://www.playkidsgames.com/games/mathfact/default.htm

Add and subtract ten
Add with 2-digit numbers
Estimate sums
Subtract with 2-digit numbers
Estimate differences
We continue to practice our subtraction facts with our timed speed tests. Everyone is working very hard and filling up their sticker charts once scoring 100% on their test. We've also enjoyed working with the estimating jar.

Happy New Year! We have changed our focus in math
class to subtraction. Over the next few weeks we will be working
in Chapter 6: Develop Subtraction Strategies.
Here are the skills we will be covering:
Count back 1, 2, or 3
Problem-Solving Strategy: Write a number sentence
Use a number line to subtract
Problem-Solving Investigation: Choose a Strategy

Next week we will start working in Chapter 3: Develop Subtraction Concepts
Here are the skills we will be covering:
Subtraction stories
Modeling subtraction
Subtraction sentences
Subtract zero and all
Problem-Solving Strategy: Draw a picture
Subtract from 4, 5, and 6
Subtract from 7, 8, snd 9
Problem-Solving Investigation: Choose a Strategy
Subtract from 10, 11, and 12
Vertical subtraction
Once we complete our addition speed tests (we have 8's, 9's, and 10's left), we will start working on our subtraction speed tests.

Today we started working on Chapter 4: Organize and
Use Data
Here's what we'll cover:
Sort and Classify, using Venn diagrams
Picture Graphs
Problem-Solving Strategy: Make a Table
Tally Charts
Read a Bar Graph
Make a Bar Graph
Problem-Solving Investigation: Choose a Strategy
Certain or Impossible
We will create many class graphs like a birthday graph, our name graph, our favorite activities, and a Thanksgiving pie graph. We will also work in groups to survey, organize, and create a graph that shows what our classmates like best. This is be a fun chapter to work in!

We like to play games in math class that help reinforce the skills we are learning. Here's a list of a few games we have learned recently that can easily be played at home:
"Go Fish for 10" Use only the number cards and aces. Instead of
making pairs, students need to find two numbers that have a sum of 10.
Ace equals one.
"Math War" Instead of flipping over only one card and comparing
who has the greater number, students flip over two cards, add them
together, and the greater sum keeps all of the cards.
"Count 1, 2, or 3" Place the number cards 4-9 in one
pile, and the number cards 2, 3, and ace in another. Flip over one card
from each pile. Start with the greater number then count on 1, 2, or 3,
saying the entire number sentence as you solve.
"Doubles Dice Game" The game board came home with the students today.

We've moved onto Chapter 2: Developing Addition Concepts, which we
will pair with Chapter 5: Developing Addition Strategies
Here's what we'll cover:
Chapter 2-
addition stories
modeling addition
addition sentences
adding zero
problem solving: write number sentences
ways to make 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 (we'll make flashcards for sums of
10)
vertical addition
Chapter 5-
add in any order
count on 1, 2, or 3
problem solving: act it out
add 1, 2, or 3
use a number line to add
doubles (we'll make flashcards for our doubles)
doubles plus 1 (we'll make flashcards for our doubles plus
1)
choosing a strategy to problem solve
Every day we will spend time reviewing our math facts, preparing for our "Speed Test" on Fridays. Help your child practice their weekly facts at home by using their "Math Fact Sticker Book."

We're having fun getting to know each other in math class. Ask your son or daughter about our "Ken Ken" activity. |
Here's what we're covering in Chapter One:
