Everyone did an amazing job reading over the winter holiday! I was very impressed with how many signatures the boys and girls received on their contest record sheets. I bet you were impressed with their fluid oral reading :) We have worked hard and are now challenging ourselves with long vowel sounds. We've made "Magic e wands" that we use to change short vowel sounds to long vowel sounds. We will also briefly talk about other ways long vowel sounds can be made (vowel pairs) starting with long a (ai and ay).
Please continue to read nightly with your son or daughter. Check out the article under "Reading Documents" that explains the many benefits of reading with your child every night. Including in the article are strategies and tips on how to help your beginner reader at home.

We have spent the last month fine-tuning our short a and short i skills. We can read words with these short vowels in them, as well as words with the endings -s, -ed, and -ing.
This week we started working with r-blend words (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, and tr). You can help reinforce this new skill at home by playing BANG! with r-blend words. Here's how you play: using an old shoe box, cut a hole in the top and fill the box with short vowel words that start with r-blends. Add a few cards that say "BANG!" too. When it's your turn pull a card out of the box. If you can read the word you get to keep it; if you pull out BANG! return all of your cards to the box. The player with the most cards wins!
Next week we will read the story What A Trip! Talk to your son or daughter about trips you have gone on. What was their favorite part? What did they need to take with them on the trip?
